Multi-Party Collaboration for Battery-Free Sustainability

As the demand for non-renewable energy continues to rise sharply, these finite resources are being rapidly depleted and may eventually be exhausted. Our planet is unique and the non-renewable energy on earth is limited. Energy saving is a global topic needing everyone to take careful consideration. With a shared purpose to consume minimal energy and achieve a win-win situation between nature and technology, the idea of converting solar or ambient light power emerged and has been adopted in various industries.

In the IoT industry, trackers usually consume only small amounts of battery power, but battery waste and degradation still contribute to environmental challenges. We believe small changes can create big impacts, and this is why we consistently introduce solar-powered products and light harvesting devices. This time, we innovatively launch a Bluetooth ambient light harvesting asset tag, which is the outcome of a multi-party collaboration between Dracula Technologies, e-peas Semiconductors, Nordic Semiconductor and MOKOSMART.

Strength from Each Side: Achieving Total Battery Free

Combining strengths from every side, this M10 asset tracker achieves fully battery-free operation, setting a benchmark for sustainable IoT tracking. At its core, the M10 integrates advanced Organic Photovoltaics (OPV) technology from Dracula Technologies. The black panel on the front, also called a PV cell, uses the photovoltaic effect to generate electricity. By removing a silver layer traditionally used, its ability to absorb light is significantly improved. Utilizing such an optimized structure and highly efficient materials, this cell shows excellent light harvesting capability, which empowers the M10 to work under either artificial or natural light environments. After harvesting nearby light energy, the cell converts it into electrical energy.

Increasing light collection is important, but reducing transmission losses is equally crucial. The M10 uses the built-in energy harvesting power management integrated circuit (PMIC) from e-peas. Acting as a power collector, the PMIC stores energy with minimum losses and enables the tracker to work stably, even within ultra-low light environments. In extreme conditions, such as a temporary lack of ambient light, the stored energy is able to keep the tracker working for up to 2 days (maintaining a 1-second broadcasting interval).

Designed for world-class connectivity, the M10 equips an advanced Nordic nRF54L05 chip with MOKOSMART’s robust hardware architecture. Supporting BLE 6.0 and channel sounding, the tracker ensures reduced latency and high-accuracy tracking services. Eliminating the need for a built-in battery and any battery replacement costs, this tracker realizes a truly environmentally friendly solution thanks to zero electricity consumption and zero battery waste. With a slim, thin form factor, the M10 is easy to install on pallets or containers for relatively unobtrusive tracking. Achieving a durable lifespan of at least ten years without any maintenance, the M10 is ideal for various indoor tracking environments including warehouse operations, logistics processes, and beyond.
