Dormant remote controls and harmful batteries
Who of us didn’t run out of remote control battery? It is so annoying. Not only it involves a hurdle of buying new batteries (…and forgetting to do it for two weeks in a row), it also requires a trip to a recycle center to dispose drained batteries. Some eco responsible people do that, some don’t. This means pollution to environment.
What if remote controls could run indefinitely without batteries?
Luckily, evolution (or call it “revolution”) in electronics has finally delivered to us a pleasure of remote controls with infinite life: no need to change batteries and pollute environment. It is not a myth, it is not a dream, it is already a viable reality.
Where do they get power from?
Devices like remote controls can recharge from ambient sources that surround them. It is called ENERGY HARVESTING. For example, for remote controls, the best ambient source is solar/photovoltaic because they are exposed to light in one way or another. Some would be worried that indoor light is not enough for a device to charge but it is actually more than enough.
How does it work?
Obviously, if a device was working on batteries before, it needs to be re-designed to integrate new technology which includes 3 major components:
- PV cells for solar energy harvesting
- Ambient Energy Manager (AEM) or Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC)
- Storage element
PV cells collect light, and AEM processes, optimises and stores it to a storage element.
