NGK, Energous and e-peas Collaborate to Spread Use of Wireless Power Transmission/Transfer Systems
NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (NGK) has enhanced its collaboration with Energous Corporation (Energous), a leader in RF-based wireless power networks for IoT, and e-peas, a maker of efficient power source IC technology. Together, they aim to advance the use of Wireless Power Transmission/Transfer (WPT) systems. NGK is committed to supporting the development of edge device manufacturers and others working on WPT systems by developing and providing IoT devices that integrate NGK’s lithium-ion rechargeable battery “EnerCera” with Energous and e-peas technology.
The Future of Wireless Power Transmission
WPT is a cutting-edge technology that uses radio frequency to transmit power to remote areas. As the world shifts towards IoT, traditional power cables and disposable batteries have been common power sources for IoT devices. However, wiring complexities and battery replacement hassles have posed significant challenges. WPT offers a solution by enabling maintenance-free IoT devices, providing power to edge devices where wiring and maintenance are problematic.
Collaborative Efforts for Maintenance-Free IoT Devices
NGK and Energous first partnered in October 2022 to develop solutions combining Energous’ WattUp technology with NGK’s EnerCera battery. This collaboration aimed to create maintenance-free IoT devices. Now, with the inclusion of e-peas, the trio has developed a temperature and humidity sensor evaluation kit. They are also proposing WPT systems to power tracking devices for logistics and other IoT applications such as electronic shelf labels.
Evaluation Kit for Energy Harvesting Technology
The newly developed evaluation kit can connect to various end-devices needing energy harvesting technology, such as sensors or electronic shelf labels. The EnerCera battery included in the kit effectively stores small amounts of energy transmitted through WPT and can release sufficient energy to power devices. Despite its ultra-thin and ultra-small form factor, the EnerCera battery is versatile and suitable for many applications.
Commitment to an IoT Ecosystem
NGK will continue to partner with organizations possessing advanced specializations to realize an IoT ecosystem. By providing its unique ceramic products like EnerCera, NGK aims to facilitate the widespread adoption of innovative IoT solutions.
